Confidential 

Ombudsmen maintain strict confidentiality. The only exceptions are: 

• If anyone is at a risk of physical harm
• If we are ordered by a court or required by law to disclose information

The Office is a safe place to talk to someone about any concerns, including professional misconduct, unfair treatment, violation of policies, and unethical behavior. The Ombudsman can help you understand policies or procedures and learn how to notify officials or file a formal complaint.

Independent

We are independent from all University departments. For administrative purposes, we report to the Provost, but we do not discuss cases with anyone or take direction from any University office. We do not represent interests of the administration or any University department.

Informal

Our services are informal. We seek to resolve conflicts without litigation or official investigation. We do NOT:

• Maintain formal written records of cases
• Conduct formal investigations
• Play any role in an official grievance, complaint, appeal, or legal proceeding
• Provide oral or written testimony
• Provide legal advice

Neutral

We are impartial. We do not represent individuals on either side of a conflict, although we advocate for fair treatment of all parties.
