Catholic University permits the University's faculty, staff, and students to have access to Google's Gemini tool through the University's Google Workspace environment, and is increasing its usage of Artificial Intelligence tools. As the appropriate usage of Artificial Intelligence tools varies throughout the University and, specifically, varies course-by-course and even between assignments in the same course, the Provost's Office encourages some guidance on the appropriate and allowable use of AI.

Catholic University’s approach to using AI is guided by three key principles:

  1. We should conceive of this as human-machine teams, with the human person, made in the image and likeness of God, at the center.
  2. The interaction should be designed such that the outcome encourages a growth in virtue of the person. The opposite should be strictly avoided.
  3. The final result should be an authentic human encounter. Either a person-to-person, person-to-God, or self reflection.

Use of Gemini and Artificial Intelligence tools is meant to support the continued success and academic pursuits of our faculty, staff, and students, in service to the University's mission. In ongoing practice, the Provost's Office encourages students to consult with faculty as needed, and all are encouraged to review each course’s specific syllabus for any guidance on the allowable use of AI.

Catholic University users are further provided the following Google "Workspace" account holder protections when using Gemini through their CUA.EDU account:
